Susan Hayward has always been disciplined about taking care of herself, and her good habits pay off with many compliments.
When she returned to Paramount, it was like coming home because she had started her career as one of their famous Golden Circle starlets. As I watcher her play a scene in “Where Love Has Gone,” everyone on the set who knew her before remarked how amazingly unchanged she was. Her measurements are the same as 20 years ago. “Nothing maintains itself,” Susan said. “Your body needs upkeep like your other possessions, and it responds to care.
I think people tear themselves down with excesses. They eat more than they need and don’t rest enough. Every day I step on a scale. I never allow myself to gain more than four pounds. A lot of people who know they have a diet that works will splurge and then cut down without realizing what these swings in weight do to their systems.

Susan Hayward was born Edythe Marrener in Brooklyn, New York, on June 30, 1917. Her father was a transportation worker, and Susan lived a fairly comfortable life as a child, but the precocious little redhead had no idea of the life that awaited her. She attended public school in Brooklyn, where she graduated from a commercial high school that was intended to give students a marketable skill. She had planned on becoming a secretary, but her plans changed. She started doing some modeling work for photographers in the NYC area. bygd 1937, her beauty in full bloom, she went to Hollywood when the nationwide search was on for someone to play the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1939). Although she--along with several hundred other aspiring Scarletts--lost out to Vivien Leigh, Susan was to carve her own signature in Hollywood circles. Susan Hayward (born Edythe Marrenner; June 30, 1917 – March 14, 1975) was an American actress and singer.
After working as a fashion model, Hayward traveled to Hollywood in 1937. She secured a film contract and played several small supporting roles over the next few years.
By the late 1940s, the quality of her film roles had improved, and she achieved recognition for her dramatic abilities with the first of five Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for her performance as an alcoholic in Smash-Up, the Story of a Woman (1947). Her career continued successfully through the 1950s and she received subsequent nominations for My Foolish Heart (1949), With a Song in My Heart (1952), and I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955). She finally won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of death row inmate Barbara Graham in I Want to Live! (1958).
After Hayward's second marriage and subsequent move to Georgia
