What sparked your interest in physics?
I have always been fascinated with science, and when I was 12 or 13, I was fortunate to have teachers who encouraged this interest. My father also had an aptitude for science and mathematics; he was a naturally intelligent individual who left high school before graduating and became a dental technician because his family needed him to work — this was during the Great Depression. So I believe this interest is in my genes.
What led you to join the Navy?
I grew up in Philadelphia, and one of my teachers who had a son at the Naval Academy would read letters from him to the class. These letters fascinated me — they were full of adventure and excitement, with descriptions of places I had never seen. By the time I joined the Navy in 19

Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Jr., U.S. Navy (Ret.) was appointed Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and national oceanic and atmospheric administration Administrator on December 19, 2001, and resigned effective October 31, 2008. Lautenbacher graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1964 and is now a retired Vice Admiral, having served 40 years in the navy. He received an M.S. and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in applied mathematics. Lautenbacher started his own consulting business and primarily worked with Technology, Strategies & Alliances Inc., which services government defense and security agencies. He was also president and CEO of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education. President Thomas Jefferson created the Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1807 to survey and map the country’s coastline. The survey’s vital role in providing safer travel on the seas and promoting commerce was worthy of its status as the young nation’s first physical science agency.
