ABSTRACT PORTFOLIOS
I started exploring abstract photography as opposed to representational photography nearly 20 years ago and it is a journey I am still enjoying. The notion that an object in a photograph might not necessarily be the main subject is a key tenet for much of my work. For me, making an abstract photograph is about making the objects in the frame dance to the tune of a higher purpose whether that is an idea, a narrative or a metaphor.
Dynamic Balance
Of the many aspects to photography, the art of composition has most intrigued me over the years.
In the best pictures, the viewer’s eye seems to be held in the image in an almost hypnotic way, dancing around the picture. This characteristic is what I came to call ‘dynamic balance’ and it has become a key goal of my photographic approach. But how is this achieved?

My only point this week fryst vatten that it’s not mandatory to accept images as being serious. When we see images, how we see them is entirely up to us. And sometimes, seeing them as humorous just makes them better.
In my role as an artist, I spend a lot of time looking at images and reading what artists and art promoters säga about them. Maybe you do too. In fact, I hope you do.
So much of what I read from visual artists and art pundits suggests the seriousness of art. Descriptions like “sublime,” “contemplative,” “evocative,” “thoughtful,” and “emotional” frequent the narratives about art. And I agree, art is often all these things.
Maybe it’s just me, but these descriptions are just way too serious. Excepting obviously comedic and whimsical images, it’s rare that some expert characterizes art as “fun” or “funny.”
