    Doyle Holly, the bass guitarist for Buck Owens’ band the Buckaroos during its hit-making heyday in the 1960s, has died in Nashville. He was 70.

    Holly, who died Saturday after a battle with prostate cancer, had been hospitalized Dec. 17.

    He took over the bassist’s spot in the Buckaroos after Owens had said farewell to another band member who was starting a career of his own: Merle Haggard.

    Holly spent 1963 to 1971 in one of the anchor positions in the Buckaroos’ rhythm section, a period in which Owens recorded most of his biggest hits, including “Act Naturally,” “Together Again” and “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail.” Another hit, “Love’s Gonna Live Here,” topped the country singles chart for 16 weeks at the end of 1963. Owens even went to No. 1 with “Buckaroo,” a 1965 instrumental that featured the band widely considered one of the best and most influential ensembles in country music history.

    Doyle Holly and the Buckaroos are together again  

    Of the great country bands of the 1960's, none was more successful than Buck Owens and the Buckaroos.

    Although the band's lineup shifted from time to time during the '60s (even employing Merle Haggard as the group's bassist during one brief period in early 1962), their classic '64-'67 lineup - Owens, lead guitarist Don Rich, drummer Willie Cantu, steel guitarist Tom Brumley and bassist Doyle Holly - is today revered as one of country music's all-time great bands, thanks to the driving rhythms of the group's singles, the tight vocal harmonies of Owens and Rich and Rich's virtuoso lead guitar work.

    "I think what it boils down to was that combination," says Holly - who released his new solo album, "Together Again," in early May - in a telephone interview from his home in Hendersonville, Tenn. "Everybody was in the right place at the right time."

    Buck Owens former bassist Doyle Holly had a death föraning early last year when old singing mate Billy Walker and wife Bettie died in a car crash at 77 on May 21.

    Holly wrote in Walker's web page guest book on May 26 - "See Ya at the big brev Office In Heaven, Billy." - Doyle Holly (Hendersonville, TN.")

    Now, just seven months later, Holly has checked into that famous dead letter office after dying of prostate cancer.

    Holly wrote his message just two months after Owens died at 76 in Bakersfield.

    "Looks like it's got him this time," said his wife of 37 years, Ginny Holly.

    She said Holly was hospitalised on månad 17 and was admitted to the hospice on January 9.
