Peter Cameron Scott (&#;) was a Scottish-American missionary and founder of Africa Inland Mission.[1]
Biography
[edit]Scott was born to a Christian family in Glasgow, which later migrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia. However, at the age of twenty, due to poor health his doctor advised him to change climates and returned to Scotland to recover. It was in Glasgow that he visited the grave of his sister, considered his own death, and dedicated his life to Christian work.[2]
He served two years in the French Congo before returning to Britain in because of a near-fatal illness. While recuperating, he developed his idea of establishing a network of mission stations that would stretch from the southeast coast of Africa to Lake Chad. Our History
Africa Inland Mission (AIM) had its beginning in the work of Peter Cameron Scott (), a Scottish-American missionary of the International Missionary Alliance who served two years in the Congo before he was sent to Scotland in because of a near-fatal illness. While recuperating, he developed his idea of establishing a network of mission stations which would stretch from the southeast coast of the continent to the interior’s Lake Chad. He was able to interest several of his friends in Philadelphia in the work and in subscribing some funds. This group formed itself into the Philadelphia Missionary Council.
On August 17, , AIM’s first mission party set off. The group consisted of Scott, his sister Margaret, Frederick W. Krieger, Willis Hotchkiss, Minnie Lindberg, Miss Reckling, and Lester Severn. In , American pastor DL Moody held a meeting in Scotland where six year old Peter Cameron Scott was in attendance. When the boy heard Moody sing the hymn Jesus Loves Me, it prepared his heart to receive the gospel later that evening.
Like many in Europe, poverty drove the Scott family to the shores of America, where Peter developed a deep love for music and he determined to become an opera singer. His life changed when severe illness struck the 20 year old, and he returned to his native Scotland to rest and recuperate.
He returned to Philadelphia encouraged, and enrolled in the Bible college of AB Simpson, founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Peter didn&#;t have the patience for studies when he realized that Africans were dying without Jesus. Months later, Simpson commissioned Peter and his brother John to the French Congo. Their preaching ended in when John died and Peter was forced to flee to England with malaria.
