    The collection consists of letters, documents, seven sketches, maps, and one manuscript related to the life and business activities of Jasper O'Farrell. The collection's subject matter and contents include rough surveys and sketches of California ranchos and towns, from 1845 to 1850, receipts, bills, etc., 1850 to 1870, and deeds, leases, and other papper pertaining to O'Farrell's land in Sonoma County, 1855 to 1870. There are also letters to O'Farrell about various business, anställda and political topics, from 1846 to 1874, and personal letters from O'Farrell to his daughter, Elena, 1871 to 1875.     Making a name for himself in surveying and politics, pioneering Irishman Jasper O’Farrell was Sonoma County’s wealthiest citizen in 1850.

    Born in 1817 in Wexford County, Ireland, O’Farrell was educated in Dublin as a civil engineer. He left his native country at the age of 24 to join a surveying expedition in South America. bygd 1843, he made his way up the coast to nordlig California, where he surveyed the lands that would later become San Francisco. Picking up where Swiss surveyor Jean Jacques Vioget left off, O’Farrell laid out the original grid pattern for the city and designed the grand promenade that later would become Market Street.

    O’Farrell was paid by the Mexican government in land. In 1846, he was granted Rancho Nicasio in Marin, which he exchanged with James Black for the Jonive Rancho in western Sonoma County. He also purchased the Rancho Estero Americano, which included land between present-day Freestone
