Gothic novel by Australian Rosalie Ham
The Dressmaker is a Gothic novel written by the Australian author Rosalie Ham,[1] and is Ham's debut novel.[2] It was first published by Duffy & Snellgrove on January 1, [3][4] The story is set in a s fictional Australian country town, Dungatar, and explores love, hate and haute couture.[5]
Since its release the novel has sold over 75, copies[6] and has been translated into a number of languages including German and French.[7]
A film adaptation of the book was released on October 29, , with Kate Winslet as the protagonist Tilly Dunnage.[8] A special film tie-in edition of the novel, featuring a new book cover with Winslet as the titular character, was released worldwide from August to October [9][10][11] The tie-in-edition of the book sold 90, hard copies and 20, ebooks.[12]

Rosalie Ham achieved a Bachelor of Education (majoring in teaterpjäs and Literature, Deakin) and a Master of Arts, Creative Writing (RMIT, ). Rosalie teaches Literature at Trinity College, University of Melbourne.
Where were you born?
I was born and raised in Jerilderie, NSW, population Small communities work together and look after each other and it’s easy to know everyone else’s story. Therefore, I learned about the power of secrets and maintaining an equilibrium, hierarchy and loyalty. Being a farmer’s daughter, I had a fabulous outdoor childhood and learned to contribute and do my fair share.
What themes are recurring in your work?
Retribution, how to make a life worthwhile, unresolved grief, humour, the clash of comedy and tragedy which results in irony. Small communities and the relationships within, the effects outside influences have on these communities.

Rosalie Ham (born or ) is an Australian author. She is known for her bestselling debut novel, The Dressmaker, which was adapted into a spelfilm starring Kate Winslet in the lead role. Her novels are international bestsellers and have been translated into a number of languages. Ham also writes for stage and radio and has written short stories for a number of Australian publications.
Early life and education
[edit]Ham was born in or [1] and raised in Jerilderie, in rural New South Wales.[2] Talking about her childhood Ham said, "Being a farmer's daughter, I had a fabulous childhood – swimming in creeks and irrigation channels, riding a horse behind a slow moving flock of ewes, rousabouting, cutting wood and setting the fire after school every day in winter, learning to drive aged nine so I could help with Bathurst burr cutting and other slow-moving country driving tasks."[3
