Rizal was imprisoned in Fort Santiago from July 6-13, 1892 after being arrested for subversive materials found in a house he visited. On July 7, 1892, Andres Bonifacio initiated the Katipunan organization in response to Rizal's deportation to Dapitan. In June 1896, Dr. Pio Valenzuela was sent by Bonifacio to inform Rizal of the Katipunan's existence and impending revolution. Rizal was oblivious to the revolution while sailing for over a month before being sent back to the Philippines as a prisoner, where he was eventually court martialed and executed on December 30, 1896.
