NEW YORK – More than 16 years after separating, civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton has filed for divorce from his estranged wife, Kathy Jordan Sharpton.
Paperwork for a contested divorce was filed Thursday in Manhattan Supreme Court.

The 66-year-old civil rights activist and Baptist minister submitted the paperwork on Thursday. They have lived apart since 2004.
The pair met in the 1970s when he was touring with James Brown and she was a back-up singer.

Al Sharpton on Thursday filed for divorce from his estranged wife of more than 15 years.
The 66-year-old Baptist minister is set to divorce his longtime wife Kathy Jordan Sharpton almost two decades after the couple split in 2004 after 24 years of marriage, according to documents filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.
The pair, who have two daughters together, Dominique and Ashley Sharpton, first met in the 1970s when Shaprton worked as James Brown’s road manager and Kathy as the music icon’s backup singer.
The civil rights activist and MSNBC star has been in a relationship with Aisha McShaw, a personal stylist from Westchester, since 2013.
Sharpton or Kathy Jordan Sharpton did not immediately respond to the Daily News’ requests for comment.
