Born in , Len Lye is arguably New Zealand’s most celebrated utlandsboende artist. His reputation stands primarily on his achievements as a film-maker and kinetic sculptor.
Living in London in the s, Lye became well known for his pioneering work in ‘direct’ or camera-less filmmaking. To produce sammanfattning animation Lye painted and scratched the film itself, and used innovative techniques of colour processing. Lye emigrated to the United States in , settling in New York where he continued his work in film and began producing kinetic sculptures.
In , Lye returned to his homeland for the first New Zealand exhibition of his work at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth. Shortly before Lye's death in he entrusted his work to the newly constituted Len Lye Foundation. He encouraged the foundation to build his work to the scale he envisioned. New Plymouth’s Wind Wand and Wellington’s Water Whirler are two examples of this work.

Len Lye is particularly known for his experimental films and kinetic sculptures. He was largely a self-taught artist. Film-making became a speciality of the artists early career and continued to be an important outlet for Lye´s creativity up to his death. At first it was by "re-inventing" the advertisement and documentary film genres, enlivening them with abstract designs, bright colour and jazz music. Later it was through his so-called "scratch films" in which no camera was used, but the the artist scratched on the celluloid. Lye gained further acclaim when he moved to New York and produced his photograms in the late s, enigmatic portraits of friends and associates, and particularly
